I had a friend recommend me this read, and boy am I glad she did. We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter gripped me from the start. Based on her family’s Holocaust survival, Georgia Hunter take us into the world that her Jewish family had to survive during World War II.
There are several different storylines woven throughout which makes for a complicated yet devastatingly beautiful book. My favorite storyline was Mila and Felicia’s journey throughout the decade. I’m blown away by the complexity of this story and how Georgia Hunter tells the reader about her family’s experience through the Holocaust. I grew up learning about the Holocaust in school, but reading books like this really take you into the world of the Holocaust.
Rating: 4.5/5 stars. The only thing that I had a hard time with was the the many different storylines. I loved hearing so many storylines, but at the beginning it’s often confusing and I had to refer back to the family tree to keep everything straight. Don’t let that deter you from reading this incredible novel though! Just something small.
Summary: In the spring of 1939, the Kurc family has a very normal life. Addy lives in France, Genek and Herta have married; Mila and Selim have a 4 month old girl named Felicia, Jakob and Bella have been dating for half of their lifetime, and Halina has recently started dating Adam, a man who is a decade older than her. Sol and Nechuma, Genek, Mila, Addy, Jakob, and Halina’s loving parents, are very satisfied with their current lifestyle, but all that changes when the Holocaust begins.
For Fans Of: The Tattooist of Auschwitz. There are some similarities between these two books. Both are true stories. Both leave you in tears realizing how much suffering was caused because of the Holocaust and how people still feel its impact every single day.
